2011 National Direct Support Professional Week
September 11 - 17, 2011
ANCOR's National Advocacy Campaign sponsored National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, beginning September 11, 2011. This was a great opportunity for your organization and your entire community to honor the direct support workforce and the tremendous difference they make each day in the lives of millions of Americans with disabilities (see the ANCOR Board resolution).
State Governors Recognize DSP Week
To honor the direct support workforce, several state governors issued proclamations designating the week of September 11, 2011 as Direct Support Professional Recognition Week in their states!

How Did ANCOR Members Celebrate DSP Week? Take A Look!
First Step, Inc. (Arkansas)

Independent Living Services, Inc. (Arkansas)

John F. Murphy Homes, Inc. (Maine)
DSPs were honored at multiple events during DSP Week. Monday DSPs enjoyed playing games and munching on popcorn, cotton candy and hot dogs under a Carnival tent. Tuesday they were treated to a car wash. Wednesday was set aside for a pancake breakfast and an afternoon coffee house. Thursday included a rock concert tribute to Elton John and Friday wrapped up the events with a barbecue, softball tourney and other competitive games.

Mt. Olivet Rolling Acres (Minnesota)
DSPs were treated to a bit of relaxation and a lot of appreciation at luncheons held throughout the week. All DSPs received extra special THANK YOU goodie bags.

New Avenues to Independence, Inc. (Ohio)
For National DSP Recognition Week 2011, New Avenues to Independence held the following activities:
- Ice Social and Car Wash for our DSPs. Our Administrative Team served the ice cream and washed our DSPs’ cars.
- We decorated our Main Campus grounds with yellow flags with the names of our DSPs on each of them.
- We sold yellow flags in honor of our DSPs with a chance to win 1 of 3 lottery trees (live tree with $25 worth of lottery tickets attached) and hung the yellow flags in our lobby.
- We had a special display of all of our DSPs who have worked at New Avenues for 20+ years in our lobby. We also put the Wall of Fame on the home page of our website.
- Four DSPs took a road trip to Columbus to attend the State’s Celebration.
We participated in Call into Congress Day.

Northern Hills Training Center (South Dakota)
NHTC recognized and thanked its Direct Support Professionals with an announcement in the local paper and by hosting a car wash and ice cream social.

Rainbow of Challenges (Arkansas)
The Mayor of Hope and ROC Board of Directors Chairman, Dennis Ramsey read a proclamation during a special DSP Reception to dedicate the week of September 11-17 as Direct Support Professionals Week.

State of New Hampshire (New Hampshire)
New Hampshire Governor John Lynch is all smiles about New Hampshire's DSP Appreciation Day. Standing with him are DSP Barbara Wilson of Heart and Garden Studio and founder of the Yellow Flag Campaign, and Shirley Rogers. The grounds of the state capital were virtually blanketed with yellow flags honoring NH's DSPs.
