1. For how long have you been a DSP?
4 years.
2. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A nurse—I love to help people.
3. If they made a movie about your life, what would it be called?
Living the Dream.
4. Why did you become a DSP?
At first when I had applied to work with people who have special needs, it was just a job. After about a week on the job, getting to know the people I was working with, it no longer seemed to be a job! I actually woke up and looked forward to going to work. I built such strong relationships and rapports with everyone I worked with; they basically became my second family.
5. Who is your hero in real life?
Each and every one of the individuals I support. Each and every day they face more challenges then the typical person does in a lifetime. But they take it in stride and always seem to have a smile on their face.
6. What is your favorite part about being a DSP?
The variety of interactions. No day is ever the same—the individuals I work with have the biggest hearts and always show how much they appreciate you. I couldn’t ask for a better job.
7. If you had one wish, what would it be?
That everyone in society would look and treat people who have disabilities no different then they would treat anyone else. They are no different then you or I!
8. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Being able to wake up in the morning and look forward to spending eight hours of my day with a bunch of great people. A life full of happiness is what I seem to thrive for. Every day I go home full of smiles!
9. If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?
I would want to be like Superman/woman to be able to save people from harm!
10. What is one thing you wish people understood about you and your work?
That it's not just about a paycheck. It's about enriching the lives of others. It's about putting a smile on other's faces, just as they put a smile on my face! It's about teaching them something and in return learning from them.
