Featured DSP: Brooke McLellan

1. For how long have you been a DSP?

5 years.

2. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An astronaut or a fashion designer.

3. If they made a movie about your life, what would it be called?

The Lovely Brooklyn.

4. Why did you become a DSP?

I knew a few people who worked at NHTC and suggested the position to me. I really enjoyed seeing the people supported get out and bond with people outside of the program, and I started interacting with them enough to feel comfortable applying for a position and fell in love with what I do. I brag about how much I love my job every single day.

5. Who is your hero in real life?

My parents are both my heroes. They have taught me that strong work ethic and good personal values lead to a happy successful life. They have supported me through everything in my life and are the backbone to a very tight-knit family that I am so proud and happy to be a part of. They have taught me to never stop trying to become a better person and to give love, no matter what, and to always be optimistic.

6. What is your favorite part about being a DSP?

Seeing the individuals I work with accomplish goals they have been working on and creating a relationship that I know is lifelong and very precious to me.

7. If you had one wish, what would it be?

Cheesy as it sounds, world peace.

8. What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Graduating college and being able to return to college to start my career in Elementary Education, as well as Special Education.

9. If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?

To make money grow on trees (only for me).

10. What is one thing you wish people understood about you and your work?

That the people that I support are just like anyone else. They have the same ambitions, emotions, and aspirations as anyone would. It seems that people don’t understand that these individuals want to fall in love, get married and live in a house with a white picket fence, just as the “everyday” individual. I really try to encourage them to live as anyone else would.
