Taking Charge: 2008 Annual Report of the ANCOR National Advocacy Campaign

In 2001, the American Network of Community Options
and Resources (ANCOR) initiated a National Advocacy Campaign to address the staggering Direct Support Professional (DSP) workforce crisis facing America. We invite you to learn more about the critical daily supports DSPs provide to millions of people with disabilities and join us in taking action to build a stable, qualified DSP workforce.

You Need to Know Me...

I am the person who works with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, assisting them with their daily living skills: bathing, toileting and feeding. Their goals can be as simple as brushing teeth and feeding themselves and they need my support and encouragement to succeed.

I am the person working in community-based settings, day treatment centers, day and evening habilitation centers, and recreational and vocational programs alongside health professionals like doctors, psychologists, therapists and nurses.

You need to know that as many as 75% of the people that do what I do leave their jobs every year due to low wages.

I am the person standing at the bus stop at 6 a.m. while my people board the bus for a day of independence. Knowing that they face the fear of getting lost or being stared at strangely by other passengers, I meet their afternoon bus to welcome them back and congratulate them on their day.

Video Highlights of 2007 DSP to DC Rally

The nation is facing an increase in the need for the quality services provided by Direct Support Professionals, but a decrease in the amount of people able to play that critical role. DSPs, families, self advocates and people with disabilities are rallying to raise awareness in Congress for an increase in the workforce wage for DSPs. This video highlights the 2007 DSP to DC event, and illustrates the valuable work of DSPs and the communities they serve.
